Hong Kong Steak

by Katie Chin, Tastemaker in Residence

My twins and I love to treat Dad with this easy and delicious Hong Kong Steak recipe on Fathers Day. My mother used to make it for my father when they lived in Hong Kong, hence the name. Savory, succulent and melt-in-your-mouth tender, this dish is fit for a king and will make the special dad in your life feel like royalty.

The perfect pairing for this steak is my Lemongrass Thai Salad. Highlighted here on…

Serves 6 as part of a multi-course meal

Preparation time: 15 minutes + marinating time

Cooking time: 15 to 25 minutes, depending on steak thickness

Ingredients

1 1/2bs (750 g) beef tenderloin

2 Tbsp oil

1 tsp soy sauce

1 tsp salt

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 Tbsp peeled and minced fresh ginger

1 tsp sugar

1 tsp ground red pepper (cayenne)

4 Tbsp hoisin sauce, homemade (page 25) or store-bought

Instructions

  1. Place the beef in a large resealable plastic food storage bag. Combine all remaining ingredients in a small bowl and whisk to blend. Pour over the beef, seal the bag, and place it in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes or as long as overnight.

  2. Preheat a grill to high heat and brush with oil. Remove the beef from the marinade and grill to desired doneness, about 4 to 5 minutes per side for medium-rare, depending on thickness. Let rest for 10 minutes.

  3. Slice beef thinly and serve immediately.
