Farmers Markets and Kids

by Sue Zelickson, Tastemaker in Residence

Farmers markets are great places to take children. My four grandchildren started a love of the markets as soon as they could walk. One of them insisted on wearing her ballerina tutu to the market and the farmers still remember her. Now that they are grown up, they all go to the market with their friends and on dates. Markets help the children learn about the different fruits and vegetables from the various ethnic cultures. When they shop for groceries to cook or when dining out, their knowledge from the market trips is always with them. Many adults can benefit in numerous ways from trips to the markets as well; but going with children, especially grandchildren, enriches the experience.
