National Chip and Dip Day 2021

by Julie Johnson, Tastemaker in Residence

Calling all chip and dip lovers!  It is time to celebrate National Chip and Dip Day on March 23, 2021.  Bust open your favorite bag of chips accompanied by a mouth-watering dip to embrace this day!

Chips are hands down one of my favorite munchies – something about the crunch combined with saltiness that is so satisfying!!  Oh, and did I mention the fun that comes with dunking chips into your favorite dip?  For me, it’s about seeing how much dip you can get on one chip, making a chip and dip sandwich, trying different varieties of chips, or mixing up new dips.  My husband loves to mix a little salsa and hummus together…mmm mmm good!  I also love how chips and dip are satisfying as a simple snack or make it a meal by having nachos for dinner.

While there are plenty of options for chips, tortilla chips are still at the top of the list for me.  Siete grain free tortilla chips are a favorite – grain free is a MUST since my body doesn’t always love corn-based products!  And you know what comes with tortilla chips…salsa or guacamole!  As the creator of JJ’s Redhead Salsa, I am a master of salsa making but also like to whip up guacamole.  Here are some simple ingredients for preparing fresh guac!  Your family will most certainly ask for more - Enjoy!

  • 2-3 ripe avocados; peeled, seeds removed, and flesh scooped into a mortar & pestle or bowl

  • Finely diced red onion (1-2 tablespoons)

  • 2 garlic cloves minced or substitute garlic powder

  • Kosher salt & fresh ground pepper as desired

  • Fresh squeezed lime juice from 1 lime

  • Fresh cilantro (if desired)

Mash avocados in mortar & pestle or bowl.  Add all other ingredients.  Mix together until well blended.  Taste periodically as you mix in salt to achieve desired taste.
