The Art of Hosting & Decorating-Table Tips

Candles

Candles set the tone for the evening. Everything is acceptable; candles matching the tablecloth or candles placed in votives. The only exception is scented candles. Never place scented candles where you eat.

If you use candlesticks, make sure your candles are good quality and do not drip. The perfect height for candles is at the height of the guests’ faces or slightly above.

For a formal dinner, I recommend the “Chace” brand candles. These candles are held in polished aluminum casings with inner springs. They are beautiful, reusable, and most importantly, will not drip wax on your tablecloth. These are the candles used at the White House for official dinners.

Flowers

For a conservative look, choose flowers that match either your tablecloth or your dining set. They should only be slightly scented as to not interfere with the aroma of the meal. Make sure your centerpiece does not stand too high so that guests are able to see each other.

Individual small vases can also be placed in front of each guest. At the lake or in the country, use your imagination; wild flowers, branches, and foliage can be arranged in a basket, a watering can, a terra cotta pot, or a porcelain tureen. You can add vegetables or fruits to your arrangements like small pumpkins, artichokes, lemons, or limes. Pairing fruits and flowers will add an organic touch and will bring the outdoors in. So, be creative, and let the seasons inspire you.

You can also display a floral arrangement in the foyer or the living room, but do not overdo it; you do not want your home to look like a funeral parlor. If you are not inclined to make your own arrangements, consider purchasing an arrangement from a floral shop. My friend Martha always delights me with her beautiful creations. She is a floral designer extraordinaire and owner of Martha’s Gardens in St Paul. No matter the occasion: a lavish wedding or an intimate dinner, her creativity is without limits.

Table Décor

In addition to candles and flowers, I like to add little individual plates or bowls filled with mixed nuts or chocolates. If you have small decorative objects, such as figurines in silver, crystal, or porcelain, by all means add them to the table. For an outdoor fête, spread fresh rosé petals on the table.
