Breaking the Mother’s Day Mold

Last year not many holidays were celebrated in traditional fashion. I enjoyed a quiet weekend cooking and hiking at a cabin with my kids and husband.  As 2020 continued to roll, we pivoted from the conventional and found new and different ways to mark special occasions.

Now the slow progression back to “normal” has me questioning how I truly want to spend my time, especially on Mother’s Day.  Is it a traditional brunch in a restaurant? Or take-out (which we all got pretty good at in pandemic life) in the comfort of my home? Or do a plan a day full of the “unconventional” away from the typical mom duties of life?

With my mom living halfway across the country, we will celebrate with a long-distance mimosa toast via video call.  While many of us might have “zoom fatigue”, it really is a solid way to share in life even being far apart.  Neither one of us really got into the “all dressed up” and head out to brunch.  So after that…what’s next?

This year I’m challenging myself (and you if you are ready), to celebrate Mother’s Day any dang way you want.  It shouldn’t be a day of obligations.  We get plenty of that on the other days of the year.  So, what will it be for you Mamas?

Here’s my mold breaking Mother’s Day weekend plans:

1. Try Cross Fit again!  Just like Bloody Mary’s I try them once a year in attempt to enjoy the experience.  Who knows how it will go, but it will push my edges!

2. Teach a Yoga + Wine event to celebrate restoration and toast to hard working mamas!

3. Bring brunch to my mom friend and record our first podcast sharing beautifully raw conversations (more to come!)

4. Not be productive. Take at least 3 hours of the weekend to do nothing. Yes glorious nothing!

5. Try a new recipe (I love to cook, but it may not be your jam) that isn’t based on trying to figure out if my family will like it! I tried it ahead of time for you.  The Spicy Chorizo Chili Muffins are delicious. Give it a whirl if it’s unconventional for you!
