Girls’ California Getaway Redux: “Naughty Newport”-True Crimes-W3 Book Club

by Teri E. Popp & Laura Chin, Tastemakers in Residence

Our W3 Book Club happily accepted our second invitation to join our ‘hostess with the mostess’ Jean at her lovely beachside abode in Newport, California last spring! For a change of pace, instead of focusing on a book, we indulged in true crime binge-watching of “Dirty John”, a television mini-series based on the podcast of the same name by Christopher Goffard.

While our first trip to Newport leaned heavily into activities, we spent this trip enjoying fine dining and shopping, with the occasional bike ride thrown in for good measure. Bikes define Newport Beach and are available for hire up and down the coast!

Our favorite restaurants included: Lido Bottle Works in Lido Marina Village; Mutt Lynch’s located right on Newport Beach; Bear Flag Fish Co. for super yummy poke bowls and seafood; and Avila’s El Ranchito, our old stand-by for Mexican food specialities.

Newport Beach offers tons of shopping opportunities! On this trip, we spent more than a few hours (and dropped some series dollars!) at Sweaty Betty’s, Marine Layer and Planet Blue. Nothing highlights a shopping trip like sipping a glass of bubbly while perusing the shelves!

We made sure to finish every evening with a lovely glass of champagne, enjoying the surf and sunset from this fantastic locale! Cheers!!

We recommend the following restaurants, retailers, and rental companies for a fantastic girls’ weekend in the sun and surf!
