Tidbits From the Farm - Spring Seeding Soon

by Laura Frerichs, Tastemaker in Residence

Our farm family is back from the inspiring and exciting 2015 MOSES Organic Farming Conference, re-energized from our time with friends, new and old.  MOSES is a rite of passage for us, a bookend of winter, where we come home energized and get ready to fire up the greenhouse and start seeds. There are certain farmer friends that we sometimes only get to connect with at MOSES, and we relish in catching-up, comparing notes, and celebrating or commiserating about the latest farming season, with all its successes and challenges. The weekend fills up our well with love, light, and energy to take on another season and to head back to our farm in solidarity with organic farmers spreading out across the nation, with a common mission of doing good work on the land.

As March comes in, it is still cold. But we notice: the days are growing much longer! Daylight savings is approaching. We are dreaming of that special moment, after a Spring shower has passed by and the smell of green and soil surrounds you. (see attached photo of our farm's driveway in Spring). A favorite quote in our office reminds us of the sun’s return and our eternal gratitude for the seasons:

Even after all this time
The sun never says to the earth
“You owe me”
Look what happens with a love like that
It lights up the whole sky
-Hafiz, Persian Poet
