Long Walk to Freedom & Searching for Sugar Man

by Laura Chin, Tastemaker in Residence

This South African themed book club featured a lovely assortment ofSouth African foods.

During dinner we each read quotes from Long Walk to Freedom: Autobiography of Nelson Mandela.  My favorite quote was: "I am fundamentally an optimist.  Whether that comes from nature or nurture, I cannot say.  Part of being optimistic is keeping one’s head pointed toward the sun, one’s feet moving forward. There were many dark moments when my faith in humanity was sorely tested, but I would not and could not give myself up to despair.  That way lays defeat and death.”

Our Elite Epicurean Menu included:

Cucumber Zucchini Salad---Bobotie a type of curry with dried apricots, apple, golden raisins, almonds and lamb, beef or chicken----topped with a Milk Tart with Strawberries.

After dinner we watched “Searching for Sugar Man” a movie about Two South Africans set out to discover what happened to their unlikely musical hero, the mysterious 1970s rock 'n' roller, Rodriguez.
