My First CSA Summer

by Cindi Sutter, Founder of The Spirited Table®

I must be honest. Until last fall, I really didn't know the story behind the CSA box. Community Supported Agriculture is truly found in most everyone of our communities.

Local farmers like Laura, Adam, and Eli (their very young son) at Loon Organics Farm help support a wider community of rookies like me with amazing fruits and vegetables. I chose to share this experience with a fellow Tastemaker, since I really didn't know what I was getting into. So every other week, I pick up a box full of colorful culinary delights at a satellite location about 7 minutes from my house. Easy right? Ok, now what do I do with all these goodies?

  1. Prep the vegetables ahead of time, so they are ready to go.
  2. Dip into hummus. Crunch away. Make a salad.
  3. When in doubt? Make a soup.

Someone recently said "I pick up the box and don't know what to do with it?" Don't overthink it, it really doesn't have to be much harder than chopping and sautéing.

My husband doubted the benefits of this magic little box. Every salad, soup or side dish prepared this summer with the bounty from the box, has received this comment from his sweet, doubting face; "this is the best soup, salad etc. EVER!"

Enough said. Sign up for next year and enjoy.
