Poutine & Margaritas...Why Not?

by Christina Meyer-Jax, Tastemaker in Residence

Summer festivals are quite frankly one of my favorite parts of the season. Why? Because where else can you find the best mash-ups of cuisine right next to Old World traditional favorites! It also might be because this dietician loosens up, indulges in the “food-on-a-stick” category and let’s large ice cream sundaes count as “dinner” for hungry beached-out kids.

Want to keep the summer going strong? Take in your favorite festivals, or find new ones!  There is great joy found in experiencing food that requires a “local” to explain its origins, or a grandmother who will not reveal the secrets to the recipe.

Here are some of my family’s new and old favorites:

  1. Dozinky Days—New Prague, MN - Favorite foods:  Kolacky (apple is my favorite) and Vomachka soup
  2. Irish Fair—St. Paul, MN - Favorite Foods: Shepard’s Pie and Jameson (that counts as a food right?)
  3. The Taste of Dorset—Dorset, MN - Favorite Foods:  Who can turn down the unique combo of Poutine and Margarita’s
  4. Minneapolis Farmer’s Market (ok not technically a festival, but it is to us every week)—Minneapolis, MN - Favorite Foods: Fresh squeezed Lime-Aid and Shredded Pork Sandwiches

Don’t let summer slip away…plan a festival getaway!

I would love to hear about your favorites and the foods that make it special!
